Pet Store

“How much is that doggie in the window?” is a song that is all about the old fashioned American pet store. Or perhaps it’s about a dog. Either way, the song is about pet ownership. I don’t believe a trite 50’s song can really encompass the totality of pet ownership. For that matter, this piece may fall short of that lofty mark as well.

The song does, however, give us a starting point to work from in discussing the pet store. The store of bygone days was a small shop run by a local proprietor. The shop owner sold pet supplies and food, as well as pets themselves. Today stores like this still exist, although they are less common than they once were.

If there’s one thing we got out of the nineties, it was the idea “too big” was un-American.  PetSmart is emblematic of this attitude, as it was during the nineties that it grew from a feed warehouse style store in the phoenix area into the country-wide animal ownership conglomerate that it is today. It virtually redefined what it was to be a pet store, and put many smaller operations out of business in the process. Today you can find these stores in nearly any major metropolitan area.
